FAQ's

FAQ's
Q: What is the difference between fall and spring recruitment?
A: Spring recruitment is much more informal. You can choose which chapters you are interested in visiting and attend events for a half-hour or two hours—whatever fits your schedule best. However, chapters are limited in the number of women they can take in the spring based on the number of sisters they already have. Some chapters may not take anyone in the spring. Fall recruitment is a more formal process. Potential new members (that's you) will visit all chapters and have a Recruitment Counselor who will meet with them prior to each recruitment event. In the fall, each chapter can take an equal number of new members.

Q: I went through recruitment and pledged at another school. I wasn’t initiated and decided to transfer to Texas State. Can I join a sorority?
A: You can go through the recruitment process as long as it has been one year since you pledged at the other school. To pledge a sorority, you must sign a Membership Recruitment Acceptance Agreement (MRAA) that binds you to that chapter for one full year. If you have specific questions concerning similar situations, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Q: I am transferring to Texas State in the fall and would like to participate in recruitment. Will my GPA from my current institution count or will I have to wait until I earn a GPA at Texas State?
A: You will use your current college credits from all universities attended. However, if you have less than 12 credit hours, your high school GPA will be used.

Q: How much are dues?
A: Dues vary for each chapter on the Texas State campus. Your first semester is always the most expensive semester. Most new member dues range from $700-1000 and can be paid using a payment plan through the course of the semester. Chapter dues often decrease after the first semester and vary from chapter to chapter depending on what is included. For example, some chapters' dues may include a meal plan or cover t-shirt costs, while other chapters may not. Be sure to ask chapter members at a recruitment event about specific chapter costs.

Q: Do I need letters of recommendation to go through recruitment?
A: The value of Letters of Recommendation varies from chapter to chapter. They are more encouraged in some than in others, and required by a few. However, if a potential new member knows someone close to them who wishes to provide a letter of recommendation, such letters would certainly be welcomed. Many chapters actually provide their own national form for letters of recommendation. Please note that if you do have someone send a letter of recommendation, please have them send it directly to the specific chapter.

Q: Do I need to be a legacy to be accepted in a sorority? Or does being a legacy help my chances?
A: A legacy is the daugter, sister, son, or brother of a sorority alumnus or alumna. No, it is not a requirement to be a legacy to join a sorority at Texas State. Each sorority deals with legacies differently. Most of our sisters, in fact, are not legacies of any sorority, and some may have joined different organizations from the ones their mothers were in. Legacies can be indicated on the online registration form, and if you are a legacy, we would encourage you to note that. This allows sororities at least to have the information, which they will use differently depending on how they weight legacy consideration.

Q: Will I be hazed as a new member?
A: Hazing is absoltely not allowed on the Texas State University-San Marcos campus nor by the National Headquarters of any sorority. You can find the hazing policy in the Recruitment Rules and Guidelines found on this website. If you feel that you or someone you know is being hazed in any way, please come forward to the Panhellenic Executive Board or the Office of Greek Affairs so that such violations may be handled in the appropriate manner.
